Angelo Rodriguez High School versus Armijo High School: the most anticipated match of the season, since it is common knowledge that both schools have an intense rivalry. On the fateful day of Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019, our own Rodriguez mustang wrestlers faced the Armijo Indians, in hopes of taking a win. It was no surprise when the final score came in, giving the Mustangs a victory with an ending score of 48 to 30.

To backtrack a bit, Michael Clarkston, a Rodriguez science teacher and one of the wrestling coaches shared his feelings going into the match. At first, Clarkston admits that his feelings going into the match left him a bit worried because of “a couple injuries”, that kept two of his starters out of the match. However, he still had faith in the team, stating that they were “solid.” Before the match began, he helped ease any nervousness by advising his wrestlers “not to worry about who goes out there, but to wrestle how we practice.”

The advice Clarkston gave seemed to pay off in the long run, as the wrestlers had great success. During the match, a couple of key players stood out to him and had exceptional performances. These wrestlers included: Connor Dikitanan, Logan Kuehl, and Jason Carpio. Great job boys!

Looking to the future, Coach Clarkston shared what is in store for the rest of the season. As league games come to a close, the individual aspect of wrestling becomes more prominent. With a major league tournament coming up in a couple of weeks, Clarkston plans to emphasize the importance of “staying healthy”, and “improving individual strategies” to his wrestlers.

After this victory, Coach Clarkston and the Rodriguez wrestlers have much to be proud of and look forward to what the rest of the season has to hold. Keep working hard mustangs!
