As humans, we rely on our sense of hearing on a daily basis, and living without it is a severe challenge that many have to deal with.  These individuals should be glorified for their relentless efforts to merely live the same life as one without hearing defects. Additionally, playing high school soccer at the Varsity level is no easy feat for anybody.  For Klinsman Ruano, this is the difficult path that lays before him.

Klinsman is a Junior and is in his first year as a player on the Varsity roster.  He’s a very skilled defender and a talented player overall, but one major problem stands in his way: his lack of hearing. Despite this, Ruano still finds a way to make things happen on the field.  Since he can’t hear his teammates, Ruano and his fellow defenders communicate with several distinct hand gestures for placement and marking. He relies heavily on his other acutely trained senses such as sight to keep him in the game.  Ruano is always attentive and aware of his surroundings, making playing the game without being able to hear not as hard as one may expect.

Ruano only started playing the game of soccer recently, at the age of 16.  He had always enjoyed watching the game and relished how fun it would be to play.  The vast knowledge he accumulated watching the sport for much of his life translated well once he finally made the step towards actually playing.  Now, Klinsman can be seen thriving as one of our very own Mustang Varsity soccer players. Ruano hopes that one day he can play at a higher level than high school, a story many of us should take inspiration from, in order to never count ourselves out of anything for it seeming unattainable.
