The Armijo Indians and our Rodriguez Mustangs went head-to-head on the Mustang’s home court just last Wednesday. With Rodriguez’s strong persistence and determination to dominate against our rival team, they held a strong lead throughout the game and finished with 71 points, restricting Armijo to cap the night off with just 53 points. The Mustangs secured their 10-8 record as they took another step toward the Monticello Empire League with a blow-out victory against the Indians.

In the second half of the game, the competition began to get a little bit more intense with Armijo averaging 14.4 points in the third quarter and 15.4 points in the fourth quarter. Rodriguez averaged 14.9 points in the third and 14.4 in the fourth. Despite the Indians’ attempt to make a comeback, the Mustangs made smart and easy plays on the Indians, pushing through and finishing strong. Captains Mekhi Little, Aaron Brown, Darion Johnson, and Rasheen Frazier each scored in the double digits by the end of the game, with Brown letting off some heat on the floor with several threes on the Indians.

The players were slightly disappointed with the turn-out of the game due to the fact that the gym was not as packed as they had wanted or expected. However, despite the rain, the Mustangs student section was ready and prepared to cheer their boys on no matter what. Our Mustangs both on the court and in the stands showed up and showed out with some pure Rodriguez spirit in this blow-out match against our cross-town rival.

With that same energy, our Mustangs push onward to prepare for the next home conference game, putting their record on the line next against Wood this Friday. The captains hope to see a big turn-out as the Mustangs and Wildcats face once again after a tight loss, this time aiming for a dub on Mustang ground.
