Drum Majors

Leda Brockman

How long have you been in the REU?

I’ve been in the REU for all 4 years.

What made you choose to go into the REU?

I’ve always had a love for band and my older brother was a part of it. He really encouraged me and inspired me to go for it. In 8th grade, we got to watch it and I loved it. I’ve always gone to their comps.

Is this something you want to pursue in college?

It might be something I do when I have time to, but I want to go into creative writing.

What is your favorite part of performing?

I love the thrill of performing and getting to see my hard work pay off in a show.

How does it feel to be Drum Major?

It’s incredible. There is nothing else like it – the friendships I’ve made, the opportunities I’ve had. It makes me so happy that I get to influence the people around me

Anything you want to say?

I would completely recommend joining band. It will change your life because of the community and friendships, we’re really just a big family. You spend more time with the band family than with your actual family. We all build each other up.

Adriana Vree

How long have you been in the REU?

This is going to be my 4th year in the REU

What made you choose to go into the REU?

Music has always been a big part of my life and my sister was actually in the REU. She graduated my freshman year and she was a section leader. She’s influenced me to be part of music all my life.

Is this something you want to pursue in college?

It is something I’m looking into but music isn’t something I’m looking to do career-wise. I want to go into the medical field. I wouldn’t mind doing some extracurricular like marching band in college if it doesn’t get in the way of academics.

What is your favorite part of performing?

I like the adrenaline rush and knowing all the hard work you put in counts on this one show.

How does it feel to be Drum Major?

It is a lot of work and it is really different. I spent my first three years in the band just working towards this. Being in a leadership position makes you want to do the work to help the band.

Anything you want to say

We have a lot of different kinds of people in band and I think that is what makes it the best. When you think of marching band you think it is just one kind of person, but in reality, it’s a compilation of people with diverse passions.

Marissa Grimes

How long have you been in the REU?

I’ve been in the REU for 4 years.

What made you choose to go into the REU?

I chose to go into the REU because I’ve been doing band since the second grade and really wanted to pursue it.

Is this something you want to pursue in college?

I definitely want to continue music in college and I’ve actually thought about becoming a band director, so I would love to do marching band again in the future, including DCI.

What is your favorite part of performing?

I really like the rush of excitement I feel after doing so well in something that I didn’t think I would be successful in. Anything that really makes me excited.

How does it feel to be Drum Major?

It feels great to be a drum major. I really like it because I can see the impact that I have on people around me, and not even just our band, but I can help impact people from other schools. It helps reflect my personality.

Anything you want to say?

TOC Last year, 2017, 12:19 in the video recording, watch me fall on the left side of the band.

Erica Nelson

How long have you been in color guard?

This is my 4th year in color guard and the REU. It’s my second year of being a color guard captain.

What made you choose to go into the REU?

They came to Green Valley Middle and I saw them spin and I really liked that. I was persuaded by my friends too.

Is this something you want to pursue in college?

No, but I want to go into drum core.

What is your favorite part of performing?

People watching me and feeling the rush of it and the adrenaline.

How does it feel to be captain?

It’s great thinking back to when I was a freshman and seeing how far I’ve gotten and seeing how I can impact the freshmen the way my captains impacted me as a freshman.
