It is true that all good things must come to an end, especially when referring to the closing of the 2018 girls varsity water polo season. Intense, competitive, and successful are all words that can be applied to this year’s water polo team as they took second place in their league, winning six of nine games.

Reflecting on more successes of the mustangs, the team was headed to sections for the first time in eleven years. Going into the game, Coach Phelps of the varsity girls water polo team, and spanish teacher at Rodriguez high school, shared that the team was “excited” as “it is an honor to represent the school.” Yet there were some feelings of nervousness Phelps admits due to the fact that water polo at Rodriguez is such an “inexperienced program.” Although the mustangs lost with a score of 6 to 14, a sophomore on varsity, Abigail Wood, states that the team “worked well together” and it is something to “look forward to next year.”

As the season came to a bitter-sweet end, Coach Phelps shared some overall information about the entirety of the season. Throughout the year, the lady mustangs were consistent with their “communication and overall effort,” which proved to be their two major strengths. On the other hand, the team’s area of weakness was experience. Players on the team had not played water polo in the past as much as those of other teams. Despite this disadvantage, Coach Phelps claims that she is “absolutely” happy with the way things went.

Ultimately, the 2018 season proved to be filled with consistent hard work and improvement from the lady mustangs. Looking towards the future, Phelps will coach again next season and has plans to “increase competitiveness, strength, and experience” of the girls varsity team as she believes they can only get better. Good job to our mustangs as they made this season a memorable one!
