At Angelo Rodriguez High School, there is a wide variety of sports teams, but it is undeniable that the most intense of these teams is that of girls varsity water polo. Take it from their coach, Rodriguez Spanish teacher Amber Phelps, who consistently says, “Our girls play with intensity.” With their determination and hard work, there is no way they can go unnoticed.

On the eventful day of September 25, 2018 the girls water polo team had a home game facing Armijo, known rivals of Rodriguez. Of course going into a rivalry game there might be some extra added tension, but our lady mustangs pulled through and got that win with a score of 17 to 5. “Armijo came to play and performed hard the first quarter,” however they were no match for the mustangs who “made things happen,” according to Coach Phelps.

As Coach Phelps points out, the girls varsity team really “made things happen” this game, but there were a couple of players who stood out from the rest. Kylie Thompson, Rodriguez senior, is one of these players and scored five points for her team. Continually, Lauren Moss, Rodriguez junior,  is one player that also performed well during the game. Moss shares that she was “open a lot” and “up on counter attacks,” which she believes made her performance notable. Both girls believe that there was an abundance of communication during the game and Moss even states that “the team was very attentive,” overall making it a success.

Reflecting on the game, Coach Phelps shares what she believes some of the team’s major strengths and weaknesses were. The strong suits of the team were their “improved communication” and “driving”, which essentially is “making things happen on offense,” according to Phelps. However, there is always room for improvement and for the girls varsity water polo team Phelps believes it is working on “scoring shots on goal.” Overall, great job to our mustangs, keep on riding the wave of success!
