Tuesday, October 2nd was a crucial game for our Varsity Rodriguez Water Polo team to get closer to their MEL league. With the boys’ winning streak, they are top in their league with Armijo second, Dixon third, and Fairfield fourth. They have played Fairfield and Armijo twice so far, getting the wins in both games. Today, they really claimed their spot in sections. They secured the win with a 20-5 game against Dixon and now are beyond ready for Sections. The game was a blow-out, but Dixon still played smart offense, so the win wasn’t effortless.

The 20 points on the board were made by Anthony Licausi, Ben Trette, Austin Peterson, Jaron Agustin, Ryan Graham, Leo Ong, Blake Gella, and Tre Shipp. The highest scorers were Anthony LiCausi and Ben Trette, with 5 goals from Anthony and 4 goals from Ben. The defense was on point this game with 7 steals from Austin Petersen as well. According to the boys, Dixon was getting very heated and upset, causing them to play aggressively. Starting goalie Logan Jankauskas mentioned the Dixon team played really dirty towards the end, resulting in many exclusions and kick outs.

Dixon did act out during the game, which caused two roles getting kicked out in the game on the Rodriguez team. Stevenson Linder and Ryan Graham were both rolled for Dixon’s outrageous acts. Stevenson described the experience, saying that ¨They were getting wrecked by our superior team, so he decided to put me in a headlock and the other kid decided to drown Ryan.¨ Since our boys like keeping the Rodriguez name clean and represent the school with good sportsmanship, they didn’t hit back.

The boys’ varsity hasn’t been to sections in years, so this is a big thing for the Rodriguez water polo program. Most of these players play in different club teams to advance their skills, which is why they are as good as they are now. The team has made a lot of improvements this season, such as holding a team at 0, undefeated in league, great communication, and amazing offense and defense. Team captain Jaron Ramos said that he is extremely proud of the chemistry his team provides. He loves that they are all very good friends and always help each other out. Jaron’s hopes for sections are that they fight every last second and make it as far as possible in the San Joaquin Sections. The boys know it will be a challenge playing higher level teams outside of their league because these teams are at an equal level of competition as the boys. However, the boys are ready for every chance they get for moving on with sections and will fight till the end! Let’s go Mustangs!
