All athletes know the feeling of relief when looking at their game schedule knowing the team you are playing would be an easy win. In all league sports for Rodriguez, we always have the easy win against our born rivals, the Armijo Indians. The varsity boys only had to walk on the deck to collect their win. The Rodriguez boys have a winning streak so far in the season, starting with 3-0 in league games so far.

In waterpolo, they play the same team three times throughout the season. Since playing them twice, Rodriguez has taken both dubs for the team. Their most recent game was 16-7, as the boys displayed a variety highlights. Each team has their own strenthgs, but one thing that is different is the bench size. When looking at the corners of the pool, Rodriguez has a full bench, while Armijo had only a couple of substitutes. This does make a dramatic difference in the game.

The boys started off strong, racking up points on the board with an amazing display of offense. Points made were from Anthony LiCausi, Stevenson Linder, Tre Shipp, Ben Trette, Ryan Graham and Austin Peterson. Jaron Ramos (team captain)  said, ¨Playing armijo is always friendly competition because we have all been growing up together with the same sports, either swim or water polo.  Even though we win, it’s still a fun time.¨ Even though Armijo always loses, they never give up.. Armijo is currently 2nd in the league right now and they are fighting every single chance they get to keep the record strong. As for defense, all the boys played a very tight press, as they showed no type of fatigue. The starting goalie, Logan Jankauskas, was very impressed with the way they’ve been playing against Armijo. He said, ¨We kind of lock down what they do and they tend to repeat the same mistakes, but just locking down on each player and their type of shot really helps me.” Logan was a field player during his previous waterpolo years, and this is his first year playing goalie. Being a starting varsity goalie for the first time is pretty impressive. With his strong legs and big wingspan, he mentions that he feels like he contributes to the team more than what he did as a field player.

It’s their coach’s last year here at rodriguez, and most boys believe that this year is their prime year. They said they are doing it for Coach Al and hope that they keep this winning tradition alive.
