What is a coach? The dictionary defines a coach as, “A person who teaches and trains members of a sports team and makes decisions about how the team plays during games.” This definition can be used to describe what Coach Phelps does everyday. Amber Phelps is a Spanish teacher at Angelo Rodriguez High School, and most importantly, the coach of the varsity girls water polo team. As she goes into her second year of coaching water polo, Phelps shares a little bit about herself and experience she has with the sport.

“Kick hard, shoulders out” is one thing Coach Phelps is always telling her players as they work to build a successful team. Starting at a young age, Phelps had played water polo throughout high school and also participated in club water polo for a total of six years. One year ago, the position for coaching opened up and Phelps said she “loved the sport and the opportunity was available,” which is what brought her to the team.

Phelps has also made it known that her favorite part of getting to coach is the fact that she gets to teach something she enjoys and “help people improve.” Her past experiences and teaching skills prove that she is a strong coach and bound to lead the lady mustangs varsity water polo to much success. Take it from the words of her players, Trinity Straddeck and Lauren Moss, both juniors who state, “She’s a very good teacher, with a passion for the sport which rubs off on the team,” and “She’s super fun and I’m glad to have her as my coach”.

Overall, team goals that Phelps has set for the 2018 season are to “improve skill level, intensity, and overall play in a good game.” Going into the season, of course, she shares that there was some nervousness. However, she believes that with the talented, hard working, and committed group of young ladies, her job as a coach will be fairly easy. Best of luck to the girls varsity water polo team and their coach, Ms. Phelps, hopefully the rest of the season is a wave of success.
