Over his past three years playing football, Andrew Ammerman, Senior, says it’s been pretty rough.  The team hasn’t been incredibly cohesive or focused, but this year is a different story. Ammerman says that the team this year is a stronger family and has made new additions to the coaching staff that will enable them to better prepare for their opponents and instill discipline within them this season.

This comes after a spectacular game at Defensive End, with 4 sacks, a fumble recovery and 3 forced fumbles for a 30-7 victory over the Piner Prospectors, an incredible stat line, especially taking into consideration that the Mustangs haven’t won a season opener in 10 years! Some of your Mustang standouts against Piner were Deijon Johnson, who led the Mustangs with 109 yards rushing with 12 carries, Jackson Troutt went 9 for 20 in completions for 125 yards, Alex Mendoza caught 3 passes for 49 yards and Chris Flores caught another 3 passes for 53 yards.

One of the large negatives and big takeaways from the game against Piner was the sheer mass of penalties that the team accumulated.  Troutt described it best, “Penalties really killed us that night. We had really great opportunities but we took them out of our own hands with penalties.”  This was especially apparent in Darion Johnson’s kickoff return touchdown, which was called all the way back due to a holding call, losing momentum for the team, and a scoring opportunity.

Our Rodriguez Mustangs now look forward to the rest of what should be a very promising season.  The Mustangs hope to have a winning season with at least a 6-4 season record and a secure playoff spot. “This is gonna be our year for sure.  No one is gonna be able to hold us back. We just gotta stay healthy and stay behind each and everyone of our teammates back” (Jackson Troutt).
